Week 4, Term 2

Another awesome week! The children as usual enjoyed sharing lots for news and had fun creating things (picture 1) and I introduced a new website (we have all signed our internet safety agreements, so if anyone is breaking the rules the children know that it will result in being banned from all devices and/or a parent meeting) called "Teach your Monster to read". This is an awesome website that let's the kids create their own Monster and use their knowledge of reading to guide their monster though it's literacy life. I was blown away when I asked various kids what they were doing in the game currently and got answers such as "I have to find all the 'sh' words, the words that have s and h together...Those are sh words" ... The game could be teaching them better than I could at this rate! (Picture 2).

Finally to end the week, we counted the groups marbles! Because we have been focusing on using multiplication recently, I encouraged them to use the strategy of grouping and skip counting to find their groups total. They all eventually came to the conclusion that putting them into groups of 10 and skip counting in 10s to gain the total was the quickest way. (Although many tried groups of 2 first).
Well done to the group who had 122 marbles!!! You are awesome.

I am at courses next Tuesday (cross country day) and Wednesday so that will be why you will not see me in class. Goodluck to all the wonderful Room 5 students in the Cross Country! We definitely have a very athletic class so I look forward to hearing all about it on Thursday when I am back.

I am also aware the "new school" has been a recent topic of conversation within the kids (I have been discussing it with them, and they have many questions!). Any questions about MLE (modern learning environments) feel free to ask. It is a very exciting time as building begins in August!

Have a great weekend and thank you to those parents who have been leaving comments on the blog!! So nice to know it is viewed and enjoyed :)

Week 3, Term 2

We had another busy but awesome week!
We continued with multiplication which all kids seem to be loving! It's great to see them rise to the challenge of learning something completely new and different and absorbing and applying their new knowledge to solve problems! I am loving the full engagement that has come with teaching multiplication.

Cruz and Alex were very impressive, managing to create all letters of the alphabet out of play dough. Well done!

And Eddie and Nazrawi managed to match all of the numbers, with the symbols, with the word, with the 10s frame in 15 minutes! Awesome work boys!

We also spent the week writing about how much we love our Mums!!! The children all have wonderful and amazing parents, so it wasn't hard coming up with things to write about! They were very enthusiastic about this topic and loved creating their Mothers Day presents; pictured below.

Happy Mothers Day to all! Hope you were spoilt by your lovely children and I hope you enjoyed their gift!

Multiplication

We started multiplication this week. This is the first exposure the children have had to multiplication and the strategies we use. Here are a few of the children during their first lesson, using the strategy we focused on. I was so impressed at how quickly they picked it up!! Well done Room 5!
